The proposed project addresses most of the priorities set forth in the Comprehensive Conservation and Management Plan (CCMP) for Long Island Sound. First and foremost, it will provide many opportunities for direct educational experiences for direct educational experiences with the Sound through the hands-on marine research that students will conduct in accordance with the Quality Assurance Project Plans (QAPP’s) that will be developed as part of the program. It will also promote a greater understanding of the estuary by dissemination of the research information to LIS managers, other researchers and decision makers.
All of the components of this program will be integrated into the curriculum of the Sound School so that they become an on going instructional program for ten Sound School Aquaculture Science and Marine Technology courses serving 310 students in grades 9-12.
This grant request is submitted for the sole purpose of obtaining the funds needed to purchase the equipment and the supplies that will be used to carry out the field studies described later in the Methodology section of this proposal. |
