Greater New Haven Mathematics League

The Sound School participates in the Greater New Haven Mathematics League. The League runs six varsity contests and three junior varsity contests per year which are held at various host member schools. For the varsity contests, teams are made up of five students each - two seniors, two juniors, and one sophomore. Any upperclassman may be replaced by a lower classman, so a team of five freshmen is possible.

Each contest consists of five ten-minute rounds and a twelve-minute team round. A round has three questions. The questions come from Arithmetic, Algebra I, Geometric, Algebra II and Advanced Math. Each student participates individually in three rounds; team members work together on the five team round questions.

The junior varsity contests are run on the same format, only the questions come from Arithmetic, Algebra I, and Geometry, and only Freshmen and Sophomores participate.

National Spanish Honor Society

The Sound School chapter of the National Spanish Honor Society is called "Fernando de Magallenes." Students are inducted into the "Sociedad Honoraria Hispánica" by nomination of their teachers and for outstanding scholarship in Spanish. Requirements not only include achievement and high marks in the Spanish classroom over the past two years, but also excellence in citizenship, a demonstrated interest in Hispanic culture, eight hours of Spanish-language tutoring, 5 hours of community service related to the Spanish language or Hispanic culture, attendance of chapter meetings, participation in chapter projects, a contribution to the Spanish-language literary magazine "Albricias," 2 teacher recommendations (outside of Spanish), 1 community recommendation, and participation in one of the following: the annual statewide poetry recitation contest for world languages, the annual statewide poster contest for world languages, or the National Spanish Examination. Many students exceed the requirements! This year students in the chapter organized a Puerto Rican lunch for the entire school and planned for the showing of a film documenting one girl's experiences moving from Puerto Rico to the northeastern continental United States. Lori Blank is the chapter's faculty advisor.

Yearbook Committee

The yearbook committee is open to any juniors and seniors who are interested in photography, layout, and publication. The group meets 2x per week from October through March usually on Tuesday and Thursdays. Only students who are willing to make a serious commitment should speak to Donna Prete. Space is limited.
