Eco Adventure/Environmental Science Club

Teachers: Kim Workinger, Paula Daddio, & Bob Lizotte

The Eco Adventure Club will explore and advance students' understanding of the environment and related careers. This subchapter meets Thursdays, and additional dates as announced. Students participate in Natural Resources Career Development Event, the Connecticut Envirothon (also a C.D.E), Hikes, Orienteering, Geocaching, and Bioblitze/Biodiversity day events.


Marine Technology & Boat Handling, Small Vessel Operations

Teachers: Charles Mavrelion, Jeffrey Alpert, Ned Costello, Paul Morris, Kim Workinger, Paula Daddio

The Eco Adventure Club will explore and advance students' understanding of the environment and related careers. This subchapter meets Thursdays, and additional dates as announced. Students participate in Natural Resources Career Development Event, the Connecticut Envirothon (also a C.D.E), Hikes, Orienteering, Geocaching, and Bioblitze/Biodiversity day events.Familiarize students with Boat Handling and Teamwork, Seamanship and Waterfront Skills. Training and practice takes place three times a week most of the year with additional events and competitions.


Public Speaking and Parliamentary Procedures

Teacher: Paula Daddio, Kristi Otterbach
To participate in public speaking FFA career development events. Students will perform traditional music while educating others on maritime history. This is accomplished in part through the Chanteens a sea shanty group-

Recreational and Commercial Fisheries

Teachers: Jack Walsh, Bob Lizotte, George Baldwin & Jack Cardello

George Baldwin and Jack Walsh are advisers for the FFA subchapter Recreational and Commercial Fishing. This subchapters mission is to promote interests and careers in this field. Trips and after schools activities such as fishing, fly tying, rod building, and marine entrepreneurship throughout the year are available for SOE hours, learning, and fun. Students should contact Phil Bonang for the Marine Entrepreneurship or George Baldwin or Jack Walsh at x2718 for other information.


Marine Engineering

Teacher: Dave Low

The purpose of this group is to expose students to the engineering process by involving them in the design, construction and testing of a Remotely-Operated underwater Vehicle (ROV) for competition in the Ranger Class of the Marine Advanced Technology Education (MATE) Center?s International ROV Competition. The goal is the completion of a working vehicle by the end of April for entry in the New England Regional ROV Competition, which is the feeder for the International event. Meetings involve some instruction in basic ROV components and their function, team management, planning and organizational skills/strategies, task delegation and independent work on the various aspects of the project. This activity is open to all interested freshmen, sophomores and juniors.


Marine Technology and Small Vessel Operations

FFA Large Vessel Seamanship Subchapter (Aboard Island Rover) Students enrolled in either the Junior or Senior level Vessel Operations class are eligible to participate in the FFA Large Vessel Seamanship Subchapter. The focus of this subchapter is to continue to develop student's abilities to work as crew members aboard a commercial vessel. The students also develop their piloting, navigation, and communication skills. Students in this FFA subchapter function as crew on board Island Rover when the vessel carries passengers after school or on weekends.
