The Library Media Center
In September 2003, the first library media center opened at Sound School. The library media center is located on the second floor of the new Aquaculture Center. It contains a library classroom, a main library area, and librarian and multimedia offices. The main level can seat up to 54 students. The library classroom is used for instructional purposes, as well as special events. A video conference setup is still in the planning stages for this area. Nonfiction, Fiction, Biography, Periodicals and Reference materials are located in the main library. The Non-Fiction collection including the Reference materials is organized according to the Library of Congress System of Classification. The library collection has a number of materials which address the Aquaculture and Agriculture curricula. A Special Reserve Collection donated by a local Marine Biologist, Sally Richards, is being integrated into the library collection. The library media center is fully automated.
There are 11 computers with internet access for student use. Students can independently use the internet with a signed AUP (Acceptable Use Policy) form. Students are encouraged to participate in the district wide Book Bowl, a reading incentive program. This program consists of 10 young adult works of fiction which students read. Five student teams compete against each other at the school level and the winning team continues onto district wide competition. This is the ninth year of High School Book Bowl for the New Haven Public Schools and the third year for The Sound School.
Orientation sessions for students are held at the beginning of the school year. Students have access to the library during school hours from Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
